Annual Chapter Awards

Sigma Tau Upsilon Chapter Awards

Each year Tau Upsilon presents awards during the induction ceremony. Some of these awards come with a monetary stipend and others are recognition awards only.

Awards are to be presented to the successful candidates at the annual induction ceremony.

Undergraduate & Graduate Student Awards

Anna Gupta Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award

Purpose: To recognize an undergraduate student who exemplifies academic, clinical, and professional excellence.

Amount: $200

Eligibility: The nominee must be a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter at the time of receipt of the award, as well as have a GPA that reflects a minimum of an ‘A’ average.

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of nomination indicating how the student demonstrates academic, clinical, and professional excellence.
  • The student may nominate him/herself. In this case, two letters of support are required.
  • The student may be nominated by a faculty member or nursing colleague. In this case, the nomination is considered as one letter of support, and a second letter of support would be required from a student, faculty, or colleague.

Jessica Girard Outstanding Undergraduate Leadership Award

Purpose: To recognize an outstanding undergraduate student who exemplifies excellence in nursing practice, service to the profession, and leadership qualities that are in alignment with the values of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Amount: $200

Eligibility: The nominee must be a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter at the time of receipt of the award.

Sheila Cameron Outstanding Graduate Student Award

Purpose: To recognize a graduate student who exemplifies academic, clinical, and professional excellence.

Amount: $300

Eligibility: The nominee must be a current member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, who has paid all membership dues for the past 12 months.

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of nomination indicating how the student demonstrates academic, clinical, and professional excellence.
  • The student may nominate him/herself. In this case, two letters of support are required.
  • The student may be nominated by a faculty member or nursing colleague. In this case, the nomination is considered as one letter of support, and the second letter of support would be required from a student, faculty, or colleague.

Student Intern Award

Purpose: To help offset the cost of the induction fees for the STTI Tau Upsilon student intern.

Amount: $130 (USD)

Eligibility: The STTI Tau Upsilon student intern will be accepted into the Tau Upsilon committee as a student intern serving a 1-year term; therefore, must be enrolled for the BScN, MN, MScN, NP, or PhD for the upcoming school year.

Submission Requirements:

  • There is a stipulation that the student intern must also apply for the Edith Anderson Subsidy through Sigma HQ, however, they will receive our $130 award regardless of being granted the Edith subsidy.

Impactful Nursing Awards

Hannah Pare Mentorship Award

Purpose: To be given annually in recognition of a nursing student or practicing nurse who exemplifies exceptional mentorship and compassionate, patient-centered care. Established in memory of Hannah Pare, R.N., a remarkable mentor and graduate of the University of Windsor’s BScN program (2024) and 2022 Tau Upsilon inductee, the award celebrates her lasting impact on the nursing community. 

Amount: $200

Eligibility: The nominee must currently be enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program or have current registration as an emerging nurse leader (NP, RN, RPN). Preference will be given to candidates serving in a formal mentorship role and who are a current member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, who has paid all membership dues for the past 12 months.

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of self-nomination or nomination by a colleague or faculty member.
  • One reference which must be a current member of Tau Upsilon.

Professional Nursing Awards

Excellence in Nursing Leadership Award (Award of Recognition)

Purpose: To be given annually in recognition of a Tau Upsilon chapter member who is an outstanding nurse leader

Amount: This is an award of recognition (non-monetary).  

Eligibility: The nominee must be a current member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, who has paid all membership dues for the past 12 months.

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of self-nomination or nomination by a colleague or faculty member.
  • One reference which must be a current member of Tau Upsilon.

Excellence in Nursing Practice Award (Award of Recognition)

Purpose: To recognize an outstanding nurse from a clinical setting (broadly defined as a practicing nurse) who exemplifies excellence in nursing practice and service to the profession of nursing.

Amount: This is an award of recognition (non-monetary).  

Eligibility: The nominee must be a current member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, who has paid all membership dues for the past 12 months.

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of self-nomination or nomination by a colleague or faculty member.
  • One reference which must be a current member of Tau Upsilon.

Excellence in Nursing Research Award: 'Founders Research Support Grant'

Purpose: To be given annually to a Tau Upsilon chapter member in support of their nursing-related research project.

Amount: $500

Eligibility: The applicant must be a current member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, who has paid all membership dues for the past 12 months. The nominee must also be holding a teaching and/or clinical nursing post.

Submission Requirements:

  • A proposal, written in 12” Times New Roman font that includes the following:
    • Abstract: 300 words maximum
    • Background
    • Significance
    • Objectives
    • Research Questions/Hypotheses
    • Methodology
    • Implications
  • A current CV
  • One letter of support

Community Recognition Awards

Friend of Nursing Award (Award of Recognition)

Purpose: To recognize an individual or a group who has made contributions to the chapter, the local nursing community or healthcare community, and/or the health of people in a significant way.

Amount: This is a recognition award with no monetary value.

Eligibility: The nominee can be a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Tau Upsilon chapter, but this is not required. The nominee cannot be a nurse (RPN, RN, or RE-EC/NP). 

Submission Requirements:

  • A letter of nomination. A candidate may nominate him/herself.
  • One reference which must be a current member of Tau Upsilon.
