President's Message
As I reflect upon President Sandra Bibb’s Call to Action Represent, as nurses and Sigma members we can all relate. We should be proud to be nurses representing Sigma and displaying the mission and vision throughout our professional career. We should Reflect on our past experiences in order to communicate a culture of commitment and approach to patient care that is based upon the 3 C’s which are caring, comfort, and compassion to those committed to our care. We should Respect others to cultivate a culture of humility by being loyal and dedicated to our profession; treating others fairly; maintaining dignity and showing grace under pressure. We should Respond to champion contemporary practice by elevating the standard of practice; recruiting new graduate nurses and nurse leaders to join Sigma. Today nurses are working in a high-tech/low touch environment; but continue to provide safe, effective care for the patient’s optimal level of health. I often say, “A patient might not remember your name, but they will always remember what you did for them.” In response, we need to mentor and foster new graduate nurses to encourage not discourage, give them strength to endure to build their confidence to become caring, competent nurses. As we continue into the twenty first century, I ask you this question: How can you Represent our chapter in your daily life and practice?

CONGO CLINIC INITIATIVE
Supporting Nursing Education in Karawa
Nurses are the backbone of Congo’s health care. After graduation, Nurses go on to work in either a hospital or a clinic run by the Congo Evangelical Covenant Church. Many nurses function as independent practitioners, running clinics with physician oversight only once per month.
Students are supported solely by their families who often work as subsistence farmers. Education costs often become burdensome, causing students drop out. Those who persevere do so are challenged to pay their tuition, go without food, study without electricity, and rely on memory. Students pay $300.00 to $500.00 per year towards their education, but it does not cover the complete costs, such as books. These are passionate men and women, with a desire to impact their community.
By supporting Nursing education, you will help keep these hardworking students in school, support school resources, and change communities for generations to come. Your gift to nursing education will help strengthen these schools with curriculum, professors, and much needed support. One of our previous gifts supported solar lightening in the nursing dormitory, as previously the students were studying with kerosene lamps.
Salem Covenant Church in Worcester, MA. has a Free Evening Medical Clinic, the Greenwood Street Clinic whose Executive Director is Dr. Karin Ciance. Dr. Ciance advocates for nurses to be educators, a friend of the poor, the homeless, the stranger, the suffering and be a glimmer of hope to assist those in need.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. Checks should be made mailed to: Karin Ciance Anna Maria College Box M 50 Sunset Lane, Paxton, MA. 01612. Please note your check memo as: Paul Carlson Partnership.
