DeLisa M. Cofer, PhD, RN President
    Eta Beta Chapter

As I complete my first year as President of the Eta Beta Chapter of Sigma, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible support that I have received. Guided by Sigma’s Call to Action to Represent - Reflect Respect, and Respond, I began my presidency with a commitment to lead with purpose and integrity, and our Chapter has truly risen to the occasion.

This Spring, Eta Beta was highly involved in Chapter events, as you will read in the upcoming pages. Students and faculty participated in rich scholarly activities both on campus and at the Eastern Regional Nurses Society (ENRS) in Philadelphia. We hosted several events that fostered collaboration of professional nurses and students, and our commitment to service remains strong through a variety of volunteer efforts. We are proud of the meaningful connections and the positive impact made within our Chapter and the community.

As we finish out Sigma’s current organizational Call to Action, Represent - Reflect Respect, and Respond, we are inspired to carry these values forward in our ongoing efforts to lead with purpose and compassion.

I am eager to learn about Sigma’s upcoming theme at the 48th Biennial Convention and howit will guide our growth and initiatives in the coming year.

The documentation for the Chapter Key Award is ready for submission. Award recipients will be announced at the 48th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis this November. Our chapter will be represented by me and by President Elect, Dr. Lori Kokoszka. As the Chapter Delegates, we are ready to celebrate, learn and connect with fellow Sigma leaders.

Looking ahead, I encourage each of you to stay connected, renew your membership (click here), and continue to contribute to our shared mission of advancing nursing excellence, locally and globally.

    With gratitude,

    DeLisa Cofer

    Nursing Faculty Podium Presentations
From shock to strength: Understanding sudden loss, Lori Kokoszka, PhD, RN and Meg Hall, PhD, RN, CCRN

Pictured: Dr. Meg Hall (L) and Dr. Lori Kokoszka (R)

Evidence exists surrounding nurses’ perceptions of the care provided to sudden loss survivors in the emergency department (ED); however, limited data exists about families who have experienced the death of a loved one in the ED. A qualitative, interpretive descriptive approach was used, based on Thorne’s methodology. Purposive sampling resulted in eight participants who engaged in semi-structured interviews. Data were coded and analyzed for four themes: Trudging toward imminent doom; surviving the selfness of grief; unintentional insouciant care; and the ponderousness of the grief stone. Lack of empathetic care by nurses or use of “transactional care,” also described as “machine-like,” was identified by participants. Findings implicate the need for nurses to incorporate Sudden Loss Etiquette, a guide to approaching intimate communication, in their individualized care during early stages of grief.

American adolescent e-cigarette use and associated problem behaviors, socio-cognitive factors and socio- contextual factors, Emily Battaglia, PhD, CRNP

This study's purpose was to explore adolescent e-cigarette use and dual use of e- cigarettes with other tobacco products and the relationships between socio- contextual variables, psychological variables, and problem behaviors. A cross- sectional descriptive study was conducted using secondary data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Multiple logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between the variables and problem behavior. E-cigarette use and dual use were both correlated with experiencing electronic bullying, sadness, alcohol use, marijuana use, and sexual risk behaviors. Implications for nurses working with adolescents include screening for e-cigarette use and dual use at every health care visit.

    Interprofessional Presentation
Exploring interprofessional end-of-life communication through simulation: A qualitative study, Stephanie Jeffers, PhD, RN; Eric Stein, DSW, LSW; Meg Hall, PhD, CCRN; Caroline Campbell, PhD, LSW; Carly King MSW, LSW

Current nursing research supports education on end-of-life (EOL) communication skills in a simulated environment, yet few studies focus on the work and relationships of registered nurses and social workers collaborating to provide effective and compassionate EOL education. An interdisciplinary simulation about death and dying was conducted with 16 undergraduate nursing students and 3 graduate social work students to understand their perceptions regarding communication with patients and families at the EOL and to explore their perceptions of interprofessional roles. Simulations lasted 20 minutes and were followed with a 30 – 45-minute debriefing focus group. Qualitative data revealed 3 major themes surrounding the power of peer support, importance of communication skills, and identification of professional roles. The findings of this study have important implications for continuing education surrounding interprofessional collaboration, particularly as it relates to EOL care.

In addition to SERVICE through ongoing scholarly activities, and volunteering at the Wollman Clinic and Wellness Center at St. Paul’s, our Chapter also engaged in fundraising and philanthropy this Spring.

    FUNDRAISING

Proceeds from Eta Beta fundraisers make it possible to provide scholarly grants and awards to members, to subsidize student membership in the Tri- State Consortium, and to engage in philanthropy.

On 4/25/25, a raffle basket fundraiser was held at the end of the Eta Beta Scholarship Symposium. Items in the basket included a $50 gift card for Figs, a thermal water bottle, sparkling cider, chocolate treats, and spa items. The lucky winner was Wendy Black Dorn, MSN, CRNP! Congratulations, Wendy!

    PHILANTHROPY

The Eta Beta Chapter has a longstanding annual tradition of gifting the Sigma Foundation for Nursing, specifically for the Research Fund. This March, we donated $248 in support of research!

Our donation to the Sigma Foundation for Nursing provides annual funding for research grants, leadership education grants, membership subsidies, and Sigma initiatives. In the current fiscal year, $450,000 in support is available to nurses in every global region.

Research grants empower nurses from every global region to advance nursing science. These grants are awarded by Sigma annually and cover an array of topics.

If any member has a suggestion for a fundraiser, or for healthcare-related or local philanthropy, please email dmcofer@widener.edu with your suggestions!

Congratulations to our own Eta Beta President, DeLisa Cofer for being the first at Widener University to earn a PhD in Health Professions Education. You lead by example! Well done, Dr. Cofer!
