Welcome to the Xi Eta at-Large web site. Xi Eta at-Large is one unified chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing, with two homes: the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Our chapter is committed to the recognition and advancement of nursing leadership, scholarship and service.

Killam Teaching Prize Award Winner 2019-2020
Congratulations Cheryl Segaric, B.Sc.N., RN, Obstetric Nursing Specialty Cert., M.Ed., PhD

Nominated by her students and colleagues in recognition of her outstanding achievement as a teacher, Cheryl was awarded a 2019-2020 University of British Columbia (UBC) Killam Teaching Prize. This prize recognizes excellence in teaching and is awarded annually to (UBC) faculty nominated by students, colleagues and alumni. UBC is one of six Killam institutions, the others being: Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada; University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada; University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts. Way to go Cheryl--great work--Xi Eta is very proud!
International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Honourees
Created in 2010, the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame recognizes nurses researchers who have achieved significant and sustained national or international recognition and whose research has improved the profession and the people it serves. Two of our members have been recently honoured as international nurse researchers, please read below:
2019 Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Inductee
Congratulations Elizabeth M. Saewyc, PhD, RN, FSAHM, FAAN
Xi Eta member and a professor and the Director of the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada; Elizabeth also leads the multidisciplinary Stigma and Resilience Among Vulnerable Youth Centre. She is a fellow in the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and in the American Academy of Nursing. For over 20 years, her research and public health nursing practice have focused on how stigma, violence and trauma influence adolescents' health and coping behaviours, and what protective factors can foster resilience and improve health equity for marginalized young people, especially lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth; homeless, runaway, and street involved adolescents; sexually abused and sexually exploited teens; immigrants and refugees; and Indigenous young people in several countries.
Elizabeth was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame during Sigma's 30th International Nursing Research Congress in Calgary, Alberta, Canada 27 July 2019. She was one of 23 nurse researchers inducted, and the only one from Canada. The other countries represented were Australia, Sweden and the United States.

2017 Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Inductee
Congratulations Sally Thorne, PhD, RN, DSc (Hon), FAAN, FCAHS
Xi Eta member and a professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada , Sally has maintained a longstanding program of substantive research into the complex dynamics of health professional interactions toward optimizing the care of persons with chronic illness and cancer. Concurrently, she has sustained a platform of scholarly activity in relation to the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of nursing science, including critical reflections on the nature of evidence claims as well as consideration of the contribution of nursing epistemology to inquiry methodologies. She has authored an extensive body of published research and scholarly papers, book chapters, and four books, including the popular applied qualitative research methods text Interpretive Description. In addition to several senior advisory and editorial board positions she is editor-in-chief of the scholarly journal Nursing Inquiry.
Sally was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame during the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International's 28th International Nursing Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, 29 July 2017. She was the only Canadian of the 23 member group of hall of fame inductees. The other countries represented were: Australia, Finland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States.
