Sigma Theta Tau International Lambda Phi Chapter 
Research Scholarship Guidelines 
 
The research support goal of Sigma Theta Tau International is to “advance the scientific base of nursing practice through the 
scholarship of research.” This goal is to be met through the promotion of research studies and the dissemination of findings. 
Guidelines for research awards have been developed using those outlined by Sigma Theta Tau International. 
 
Overview 
1. The amount available will be determined by the Lambda Phi board each year, with a maximum of $1,000 that can be 
awarded. 
2. This award may be distributed to one, or several projects, as determined through confidential voting by the board. 
3. Candidates for this award must self-apply. 
4. A letter of support from a faculty member or administrator is required. This letter may be sent separately, but must be 
submitted prior to the deadline date. Applications will not be reviewed without the letter of support by the designated 
due date. 
5. The decision of the board is final. 

Sigma Theta Tau International Eligibility Criteria 
1. Preference will be given to those individuals who are active members of Lambda Phi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau 
International. 
2. Students must be in good standing with the UMKC School of Nursing. 
3. Completed nominations must be submitted by the designated due date. 

Process 
1. Solicitation for Research award applications will be sent to all members and students, via the email system, in 
January. 
2. Faculty will also receive notification that this process is underway and be encouraged to recommend students to 
apply and offer letters of support. 
3. The Grants and Awards Chairperson, who is appointed by the Lambda Phi Board, will collect responses. 
4. Completed applications will be forwarded to the grants/awards chairperson by the last Friday in February by Judy 
Jellison. 
5. Each completed application will be blinded and then forwarded to the Lambda Phi voting board members and a 
decision regarding funding will be determined at a routinely scheduled board meeting. 
6. Simple majority voting will be used to determine distribution of the awards, with the president of the Lambda Phi 
Chapter making any final decisions. 
7. If the board decides that submitted applications are not appropriate, this award may not be administered, or not 
administered in totality. 

Application Requirements 
1. Each applicant will develop a one to two page (single-spaced) letter of intent. This letter must state the 
a. Purpose of the research, 
b. Stage they are in the research process, 
c. Time line for the research, and: 
d. Intended use of monies awarded. 

2. Request for funding may be submitted for: 
a. Developing the study (e.g., instrument development, participant recruitment, obtaining equipment, pilot 
study), 
b. Assisting with data collection, 
c. Analyzing data, and/or 
d. Disseminating research findings, such as travel, poster development or manuscript assistance. 

3. A letter of support from a faculty member or administrator is required. 
a. This letter may be sent separately, but must be submitted prior to the deadline date. 
b. Applications will not be reviewed without the letter of support by the designated due date. 

4. Research applicants will be notified in a letter from the Grant/Award Chairperson prior to induction. 

5. Awardees will be recognized and monies distributed during the Spring Induction ceremony. 
a. If an awardee is not eligible to attend the Spring Induction Ceremony they are to notify Judy Jellison. 

6. Awardee will then present their findings at a future chapter meeting.

Leadership Awards

 

In keeping with the Strategic Plan and Leadership Vision of Sigma Theta Tau International “to create a global community of nurses who lead in using scholarship, knowledge and technology to improve the health of the world’s people”, the Lambda Phi Chapter has aligned its grants and awards program to assist in meeting the Leadership and Research Support goals outlined by Sigma Theta Tau International.

 

LEADERSHIP RECOGNIZATION AWARDS

The leadership goal of Sigma Theta Tau International is to “prepare and position nurses to lead in diverse, complex, health-related environments.”  This goal is met through the recognition of nurses demonstrating leadership abilities, whether contributing to direct care, administration, education and research or health policy. Guidelines for leadership awards,  provided by Lambda Phi Chapter , include seven (7) categories for recognizing individuals who demonstrate excellence in behaviors that are superior, distinct, outperform and represent great performance.

 

  1. Excellence in Research and Evidence-based Practice

    This award is granted to individuals who demonstrate distinct research and/or evidence-based practice initiatives that demonstrate a superior design and have important contributions to nursing and healthcare.

  2. Excellence in Education

    This award is granted to individuals whose outstanding performance in education produces positive outcomes in populations they serve.

  3. Excellence in Nursing Practice

    This award is granted to individuals who demonstrate an exemplary nursing practice with exemplary outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and practice.

  4. Excellence in Leadership

    This award is granted to individuals who outperform as a both leader and follower among peers and colleagues.

  5. Excellence in Student Performance

    This award is granted to individuals who consistently exceed course objectives.

  6. Excellence in Mentorship

    This award is granted to individuals who demonstrate outstanding mentorship behaviors that are affirming and honest with colleagues and peers.

  7. Judy Jellison Lambda Phi Service Award

This award is granted to individuals who exemplify a support for learning, knowledge, and professional development of nurses and who are committed to making a difference in health worldwide.

 

Sigma Theta Tau International Eligibility Criteria

  1. Preference will be given to those who are members of Lambda Phi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International or those individuals eligible at induction.
  2. GPA[S1]  of B (3.00) or better, if student.
  3. Nomination of support from a peer or UMKC faculty member that fulfill the guidelines and criteria on the Lambda Phi Chapter Leadership Recognition Nomination Form (Appendix A).
  4. Where appropriate endorsement from community agency, member(s), or population.

Process

  1. Candidate solicitation will be done via email to each faculty and to Lambda Phi membership in January of each year, with responses due the last Friday in February at  3:00 p.m. CST to Judy Jellison.
  2. The Grants and Awards Chairperson, who is appointed by the Lambda Phi Board,  receives responses from Judy Jellison.
  3. Nominations are collated and presented to the board prior to a normally scheduled board meeting by the Grants and Awards Chairperson.

Selection of Recipients

  1. The Lambda Phi board may award up to seven (7) leadership awards ($100.00 each) each year, one from each category.
  2. Any student, in any educational tract, is eligible for any one award each year.
  3. Any community member is eligible for any one award each year.
  4. A letter of support from any faculty member or Lambda Phi member, indicating a specific category, is required for consideration (Appendix A).
  5. Current voting board members of the Lambda Phi Chapter will confidentially vote to determine awardees, with all decisions being final[S2] .
  6. Prior to induction the Grant/Award Chairperson will notify leadership applicants by letter.
  7. Awardees will be recognized and monies distributed during the Spring Induction ceremony.
    1. If an awardee is not eligible to attend the Spring Induction Ceremony they are to notify Judy Jellison.
