Chapter History

Kappa Lambda Chapter was chartered on April 28, 1988 as the 249th chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at Otterbein College (University) in Westerville, Ohio. Otterbein was founded in 1847 as the second liberal arts education institution in the United States to provide equal higher education for men and women.

Kappa Lambda Chapter was the result of the interest of early nursing faculty in the Department of Nursing to develop an honor society that could become a member of Sigma Theta Tau. In 1977 an associate degree program in nursing was developed at Otterbein, and in 1980 a BSN completion program was developed. The BSN program was accredited by NLN in 1983 and provided the impetus to develop an honor society. A steering committee of faculty, students, and alumnae was established to develop a department nursing honor society based on the requirements of Sigma Theta Tau that had been notified of these plans.

The local chapter held meetings and inductions with programs. The first induction to the local honor society was December 12,1984; the second was April 11, 1985; the third was April 9, 1986; the fourth was May 18, 1987. The local chapter applied for membership to Sigma Theta Tau in the 1985-87 biennium. In 1987, the chapter met with two Central Ohio Sigma Theta Tau chapters and another local chapter to plan joint programs. Dr. Doris Edwards, third vice-president of Sigma Theta Tau, conducted the chartering ceremony of Kappa Lambda Chapter. Fifteen charter, transfer, and dual members and sixty-one new members were inducted.

Since the chartering of Kappa Lambda Chapter, Otterbein has moved to granting BSN, MSN, and DNP degrees. Eligible students from these programs have been inducted each year based on the criteria of Sigma Theta Tau International. Kappa Lambda chapter continues to give scholarship awards for undergraduate and graduate students each year and service to nursing awards, research award, and service to chapter award based on nominations submitted. As a member of the Central Ohio Consortium of Sigma Theta Tau chapters, Kappa Lambda participates in providing two continuing education programs to the nursing community each year. The chapter continues to support leadership, professional standards, scholarship, and research for the nursing profession.
