Small Research Grant Information and Application
Kappa Pi Chapter At-Large is pleased to announce that a Small Research Grant up to
$1000 is available to the membership. The award dollars may be awarded in whole or divided
among grantees. The grant(s) will be awarded annually to qualified recipient(s).
This year, the grant will be awarded at the annual Spring Induction Ceremony in April.
The application deadline is March 22, 2013 at 4:00pm.
If you are interested in applying for the grant, to support a research project or thesis, please submit
the following materials and application form by the deadline listed above. Upon receipt of all application
materials, a review process will occur. The grant recipient(s) will be notified of the selection decision within four weeks and prior to the date of the Induction Ceremony. If you are selected as the recipient, you are highly encouraged to attend the Induction Ceremony. Monies must be spent in the subsequent year or returned to Kappa Pi Chapter At-Large. Grant recipients are encouraged to share the results of their research at a future chapter meeting or scholarship event.
Eligibility Qualifications for Applicants:
1. An active member of Kappa Pi Chapter At-Large or accepted for induction at the spring meeting;
and
2. A Registered Nurse holding a minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, or currently enrolled in a BSN program

RESEARCH PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
PART ONE
Title and Abstract:
A title page and abstract are to accompany the proposal. The abstract should include the hypothesis or question, the specific variables and their measurements, the population and sample description and a statement of the design and analysis.
Proposal Outline:
The following areas are to be included in a proposal. American Psychological Association (APA) style of documentation is required.
Body of Proposal: (No more than 6 pages of text excluding appendices)
I. Purpose of the Study:
State clearly the purpose of the study, including how the project makes a substantive contribution to nursing/health care.
II. Significance:
Provide the background of your proposal. Critically evaluate existing knowledge. Specify the gaps that the project is intended to fill. State concisely the importance of the research in terms of the contribution to nursing and potential for leading to further research inquiry, methodology or theory development.
III. Specific Aims/Hypothesis:
State concisely what the research described is intended to accomplish and/or what hypothesis (es) is (are) to be tested.
IV. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework or Rationale:
Summarize the theoretical framework or rationale as appropriate, addressing the relationship among the specific aims, the literature, key concepts, variables, and instruments.
V. Literature Review:
Literature may be reviewed as a separate section or as part of background, significance, and/or conceptual framework. Include current literature that is directly pertinent to the project and that assists in clarification of purpose and procedures.
VI. Method:
Discuss in detail the methodological approach, the research design, and the procedure to be used to accomplish the specific aims. Describe new methodology. Discuss potential difficulties and limitations of the proposed procedures and alternative approaches to achieve the aims.

B. Subjects and Setting:
C. Describe the target population and characteristics of the subjects. Include the number of
subjects, the rationale for sample size, the sampling procedure, and the setting for data
collection..
D. Instruments:
Report the specific characteristics of the instruments, including their reliability, validity,
and/or sensitivity. Address how the tool will be used. The instrument(s) (e.g., a questionnaire
should be included in an appendix.)
E. Procedure:
Describe the design and the procedure to be used for the proposed data collection. Specify
the kind of data you expect to obtain. Give details of client/subject selection and ntervention,
if they are involved. If appropriate, discuss potential problems with and/or limitation of the
procedures. Discuss in detail any procedure, situation, and/or material in your proposed
research that may be hazardous to subjects. Indicate precautions to be exercised.
F. Plan for Data Management/Analysis:
Describe the means by which the data will be merged, analyzed, and/or interpreted.
G. Limitations:
Describe the limitations of the study including those related to design and methods
H. Human Subjects or Animal Use:
Provide a statement of the subjects’ rights and risks. Provide a statement of the procedure used for animals, if applicable. Include a copy of the Institutional Review Board’s (IRB) approval and a copy of the human subject consent form.
If IRB approval is pending at the time of submission, please indicate when the application for approval was submitted to the review board. If IRB approval is received prior to March 22, 2013 please add it to your proposal. If it is received after this date, please send a copy of it to:
VII. Time Frame: Provide a 12-month schedule that specifies the timing of the main steps of the investigation.
