    Good morning!

My name is Alex Kemery (he/him/his or they/them/theirs). I'm queer and trans, and I am an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Indianapolis. I completed a PhD from the Catholic University of America with a dissertation focus on LGBTQ+ end of life. Currently, I am in the final year of a post-master's Adult Gerontology Primary Health Nurse Practitioner program, and will be doubling back to complete the requirements for a Family Nurse Practitioner degree next summer.

How lovely to meet someone else focused on LGBTQ older adult work. It's a tiny space, and I'm always overjoyed to hear of others thinking about our community elders. Good luck on your NP program!

Hello! My name is Angie Webster (she/her).  I graduated from Kent State in 2004 with an associate's degree in nursing and immediately began working for Mercy Medical Center in Canton (the Football Hall of Fame City).  I obtained my BSN from Ohio University in 2015 and am currently enrolled at Capella for my Master's in Leadership and Administration.  I am currently an Assistant Nurse Manager on a Med/Surg/Tele unit, but my passion is end-of-life care and health care policy for at risk/underserved communities (hence my interest in service to the LGBTQ+ community).  Mercy became part of the Cleveland Clinic enterprise about one year ago.  I am excited to see the changes in how we approach and care for our members of the LGBTQ+ community.

I am also quite interested in holistic end-of-life modalities (in conjunction with those that are science based, like medications) and plan on moving forward with learning Reiki and training to be a death doula.  Although I work in med/surg currently, much of my nursing career has been spent in Oncology and Hospice.  So glad to connect!

    Looking forward to your participation.

    Hello Everyone,

I am Carissa Lawrence (she/hers/her) a certified nurse midwife and women's health NP but also a 3rd year PhD student (haha, that's a mouthful!).  I am passionate about LGBTQ health.  My dissertation will focus on transgender men and psychological distress around reproductive decision making.  I am excited about this part of my journey and open to resources, guidance, articles, support; anything people are willing to offer in this group. It is terribly hot these days, stay cool and hydrated.

    Regards,

Your dissertation topic is timely as the uncertainty of not only LGBTQ+ health but also reproductive health seems to be in turmoil. I look forward to hearing your perspective and hope this community supports you in your work.

    Hello from Ohio!

My name is Lisa Dugan-Manor (she/her/hers), and I just finished my MSN with a focus on Nursing Education with Chamberlain University. I came to nursing later in life (though it had always been my intended career path, I got sidelined by marrying and having kids in my twenties), after a sixteen year career in Information Technology working for a locally based financial institution. Interestingly, I always assumed I would pursue midwifery, having spent many years as a doula. However, every single project I did in school focused on the LGBTQ+ community, and improving access and removing barriers for this (and other) marginalized communities has become my driving passion. I changed tracks in the MSN program several times trying to find the best fit for me, and decided I could make the most impact by working to improve education about LGBTQ+ health issues for nurses at the bedside, since research has shown most nurses receive 2.5 hours of instruction on LGBTQ+ health topics or less in nursing school (of course, I'd also like to work to improve that statistic, my family is taking bets how long till I start working on a PhD).

I currently work as an RN Case Manager for inpatient discharge planning at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. I worked at UCMC as my first job out of nursing school on the general med-surg unit, with a one year detour to labor and delivery and then back to med-surg, where I was regularly charge nurse and precepted a co-op student from the University of Cincinnati's BSN program before taking a position at Equitas Health (a welcoming PCMH and FQHC that specializes on gender-affirming care and HIV/AIDs and STI prevention and treatment) as Nurse Manager and RN Care Coordinator. Equitas Health is based in Columbus Ohio, and we opened the Cincinnati clinic on the very day Ohio shut down for the pandemic, March 23, 2020. Talk about a trial by fire! I am extremely proud of the work we did to improve access to care for our community, and only moved on due to the need to focus on finishing my degree (and stop working 50+ hours a week). I'm still figuring out my next steps, and am enjoying a break from homework and spending time with my family. I'm hoping to visit my children in Seattle and their families (who moved from Ohio to Seattle because it's a more welcoming state for the gender and sexually diverse) next month!

I look forward to sharing information and networking with everyone!

    Hi everyone
My name is Judith Cornelius (she, her, hers) and I am a doctoral-prepared nurse educator/researcher at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I obtained my Ph.D. from Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago. I have family members who identify with this population and have been concerned with their quality of health care. I have published research on African American transgender women's HIV prevention needs and nursing students' knowledge and attitudes toward LGBT+ health care. I developed a survey on this topic, which has been disseminated widely. Right now, I am involved with a 6 country study examining nursing students' knowledge and attitudes on this topic. I am a member of the American Academy of Nursing LGBT+ Expert Panel. I look forward to meeting everyone in this group.

Awesome work Judith. Charlotte is lucky to have you there. I used to live in Matthews, and still have a home down in SC. There is so much that needs to occur in a lot of areas. It is getting harder in the southern states with the anti-LGBTQ, and in particular, the anti-trans sentiments. The funny part is the only group I see spewing the hate, are the politicians. When I am in my home town in SC, a lot of people know I transitioned, and a lot of people don't know, but I just do not get any hate.

    Good afternoon,

I'm James Reedy (he/him).  I just finished my DNP in Health Systems Executive Leadership at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.  I'm a healthcare executive, relationship builder, quality driver, and healthcare entrepreneur that's curious about accessing academia to teach at the master's or doctorate level.  I've led SOGI initiatives at my last two organizations that didn't just focus on the Human Rights Campaign, HEI recognition, but actively helped caregivers connect with some of the individual lived experiences of the LQBTQIA+ community.  The coolest thing about my last gig, was that it opened up conversations about the diversity topics of race, gender, and even veteran-civilian differences that helped make uncomfortable conversations comfortable in a very homogenous (unexposed) environment.  Pretty proud of the work my team and I started with providers (mostly physicians), executives and administrators, and then frontline caregivers.  I've been surprised by how many implicit biases are carried by those we least expect, but am pleased that so many have made themselves vulnerable to express themselves and grow.

Looking forward to connecting and learning from each of you!

    Hi Everyone!

My name is Maddie Vandel, and I use she/her/hers pronouns. I am a nursing student in Bozeman, Montana and am graduating in the spring. After I graduate I plan to work on the medical floor at our local hospital, however LGBTQ+ healthcare is something that I have always been extremely passionate about. Many of my loved ones are part of the LGBTQ+ community and I have heard some of their struggles to get the healthcare that they need. I am so excited about the opportunity to advocate for patients in this community so that others do not have similar experiences. I joined this group to learn about opportunities in LGBTQ+ healthcare, as well as how to better serve as an advocate for my future LGBTQ+ patients, especially in an area like Montana that is for the majority very conservative and does not have strong community supports for LGBTQ+ people. I am looking forward to all I will learn from this group!

My name is Angie Wagner (they/them). I'm bisexual and genderqueer, and I am finishing up the last semester of my BSN at Oakland University. I participated in a program called LGBTQ Health Mentorship through the NSNA and Columbia University, in this program I completed a literature review on mental health outcomes for transgender and gender-diverse violence survivors. This was also the topic of my Honors College Thesis and capstone for my BSN. I have accepted a position working in LDRP once I graduate.

I am very interested in the experiences of transgender birthing families and the mental health of LGBTQ+ people, especially violence survivors. It is so refreshing to see a space of nurses working together to promote the health and wellness of LGBTQ+ people. I look forward to hearing more about the work that you all do!

    Hi Allison,

Welcome! Thanks for sharing about yourself. Adolescent mental health is so important, especially for LGBTQ kiddos. For the most part, society is beginning to have more conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity as compared to when I was an adolescent thanks to work like yours! I'm hopeful that today's LGBTQ youth will have an easier time accepting their identities. Though, I'm sure the addition of social media only exacerbates any mental health concerns. Do you anticipate any of your research will explore the intersection of adolescent mental health and social media?

    Welcome, again!

Yes! I also agree that social media plays a huge role in adolescent mental health and I do hope to look more into that. From my experience talking with adolescents in inpatient psych settings, it is definitely a common theme through their stories of experience and struggle.

    Thanks,

    Hi Alli,

Nice to hear from you!! Yeah, there is a concept called vicarious traumatization and I am beginning to think that the use of social media, especially if it is crafted as a total anti-LGBTQ billboard, that it can have a devastating effect. With the rise of chat bots and AI, a media company could have literally thousands of computer-generated messages flooding commentary sites with any negative message they want. This becomes a form of psychological warfare in that it can create a highly negative environment whether the information is true of false. It is a fascinating area of study.

    Sincerely
    Katie

I am in the process of attaining WPATH certification so that I can provide care to other transgender patients, and be a resource. In a time when the trans community is under siege, I believe things will get much more difficult for transgender individuals of all ages, so they need providers who have walked in their shoes so to speak. My other interests are in the emergency care of the LGBTQ community. I recently resigned from my position as an assistant professor at the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in Provo Utah, where I taught in the DNP program, and the Emergency Nurse Practitioner program.

I look forward to collaborating with all of you to be a better provider and a better representative of nursing, as well as the LGBTQ community.

    Sincerely

Welcome, Katie! I look forward to connecting and learning more about you and your work. How long does it take to get the WPATH certification? I am not a direct care provider (my specialty is public health), but I would love to explore getting this, too!

You can join WPATH as a start. They make education available several times per year, and it is a wonderful association and there is some outstanding education available. www.wpath.org to get started. I hope that helps.
    Sincerely
    Katie

    Hello everyone!

I'm Nathaniel, pronouns He/they and I identify as queer, a current nursing student at Youngstown State University in Ohio, and I graduate in May. I'm glad to see quite a few members from Ohio, sometimes I wonder about the future of the queer community here. I'm the treasurer for my campuses LGBTQ+ organization. While, I plan on working on an intermediate floor in a hospital, I recently found a drive to fight for the underserved populations more and help create health outcomes for all patients.

    In solidarity!

    Hello there everyone,

Lovely to connect! I'm John (he/they) an Assistant Professor in Nursing at University College Dublin, Ireland; and a nurse leader with Sigma Epsilon at-Large.

My research, teaching, practice and wider scholarship all centre around inclusion and social justice and I have a particular expertise and interest in sexual and gender minority healthcare. My PhD research was on Irish Gay men and encounters with healthcare professionals, and have led some post doctoral research on LGBTQI+ communities' preferences around healthcare.

I'm currently on a Fulbright exchange at the University of California San Francisco, so if there's anyone in the Bay area it would be fab to connect! Also I'm visiting NYC May 16-30 to give some lectures at CUNY and Columbia.

Really interested in making international connections to learn with and perhaps do some collaborative research!

Hi, My name is Cibele Webb PhD, MSNEd., RN, CNE (she/her/hers) and I am an associate professor at Saint Mary's College at Notre Dame, IN in the Department of Nursing Science. I teach undergraduate (BSN) and graduate (MSN and DNP) students. I am also a member of the Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) Department. I recently published a research study titled Nurse educators' perceptions of teaching patient-centered LGBTQ+ gender-affirming care to undergraduate students in the journal Nursing Education Perspectives [online]. I teach person-centered inclusive nursing practices in a nursing leadership course. I would love to connect with faculty who are committed to teaching and conducting research in DEIJ in nursing practice.

Welcome, Dr. Webb, and thank you for sharing your work with us!

This past fall, our acute care nurse practitioner program developed a patient simulation scenario around a transgender patient who was being treated for an acute MI. We partnered with trans and non-binary standardized patient actors who gave feedback on the case study and were the standardized patient for our students. It was a great learning experience not only for the students, but also the nursing faculty and simulation lab staff.

I would love to hear your other ideas, and from others, about ways to incorporate LGBTQIA+ information into your existing curriculum.

    Erik

Hello! My name is Sarah (she/they). I am a recent graduate of Western Carolina University's ABSN program and currently work in an LTACH bridging our patients from the big ol' hospital to rehabs and home health in their communities. My interests include the intersection of trauma, pain management, and substance use disorders; and how to build systems to help support acute care patients with processing their experiences in a way to minimize PTSD from medical trauma.

Further in my career I would love to work supporting rural queer populations with holistic health management in a primary care setting.

Shucks. That feels like a lot when I wrote it out. I am super stoked to learn and grow from those of y'all who have been forging paths ahead of me.
