Question for the group on LGBT Certification

  • 1.  Question for the group on LGBT Certification

Posted Mon February 13,2023 07:42 PM

    1) Does anyone have experience with an LGBTQ certificate program? If yes, please share. In another discussion thread, I will post the information on the certificate program I attended at George Washington University. It was primarily online, with a one-week intensive in-person during the summer and spring terms. It was an interdisciplinary program, and I thought it was excellent!

    2) Should ANCC or a professional nursing organization provide LGBTQ certification? If yes, which organization do you think should offer it? Would anyone be interested in forming a working group to explore this?

    3) Please contribute any other thoughts or ideas around LGBTQ certification.

Hi there! I have not found one at the RN/BSN level only for masters level and up (NP, etc).

Would love to have this cert and actively looking for a program. At Yale you can do an LGBTQ health focused "pathway" but I haven't been able to get the syllabus or reading list for reference.

Thanks for sharing Nanette. I suspect many nurses out there would appreciate certification in LGBTQ health. Nurses have contributed greatly to LGBTQ health and continue to work with this population.

    Hello Dr. Erik McIntosh,

My name is Benjamin Lindsay (They/Them).

    1) I do not have any experience with an LGBTQ Certification

    2) I feel like ANCC would be a possibility. I like the idea of the multidisciplinary approach to your program. I think it's difficult to develop inclusion and exclusion to who could be eligible. I would enjoy being a part of a working group!

    3) I think there are so many resources with developed material that with permission could be used. I think it would relatively easy to find individuals willing to support this initiative.

Thank you for your time and energy on this!

    Benjamin

Thank you Benjamin for your response and the resource! I like your suggestion regarding ANCC. I reached out to ANCC and they sent me a form to fill out for a new certification request. This may be a good path to go down. If anyone has experience creating/requesting new certifications, let the group know!

    Erik,

I came across a program at Columbia University School of Nursing. See this link: https://www.nursing.columbia.edu/academics/academic-programs/transgender-non-binary-trans-nb-health-care-advance-practice-nurses-and-pas

This program looks great. Once I have a little more time, I am looking to take this course.

    Sincerely
    Katie

Please keep in mind that there is a program by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. It is a great educational program. I just attended their basic and advanced courses. Definitely worth the money.

Another source is from the University of Utah. They had a continuing education program for transgender medicine. I am not sure what their current state is since Utah has a very unsupportive environment for transgender individuals right now.

    Sincerely
    Katie

    Hi Katie,
I looked up the WPATH course but can't find the foundations 15 hour course online. It looks like only at conferences, etc. Is this how you completed it? Thanks!

Thank you, I read this and have 2 questions - are licensed RNs eligible to become WPATH certified (or do you need to be an advanced practice RN) and is it possible to complete certification entirely online? If anyone here knows? I can also email them directly.

    Nanette,

Yes, you are eligible to become certified. There were RNs at the conference.
