Hello Everyone,
I'm a behavioral health nurse currently working on my PMHNP degree. At this point I have realized my clinical knowledge and skills need to improve within this area. My current course has made me more aware of the issues the LGBTQ community is facing on a regular basis. Negative stigma, increased rates of abuse and violence, inadequate medical care, inadequate mental health care, increased psychiatric issues, and lack of quality care is not where it should be. This needs to be improved significantly and in a timely manner. The high rates of abuse and negative stigma associated with the LGBTQ community compounds the problems experienced within the community. Access to needed healthcare needs to be available to all populations. Knowledge related to LGBTQ issues, anticipated medical care and mental health needs is areas that need to be dealt with. Offering increased education related to these topics need to occur care all of this clinical knowledge and skills needs to be improved. This is a group of interest due to all of the issues listed within the post. My knowledge base has increased recently; however, I need to continue enhancing my knowledge and skills within this area. In time hopefully this group will help me obtain needed skills and ultimately help the LGBTQ community.
