Iota Sigma Chapter held its Spring Induction on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Present were 48 new inductees from San Diego, High Desert, Monrovia, and the Azusa campus along with 125 guests present for their loved ones Iota Sigma induction. The induction was also aired synchronously on APU live for those who were unable to attend in person.
A special thank you to Dr. Renee Pozza (Assistant Dean for APU SON), Dr. Grace Moorefield (Dean of Student Affairs), Dr. Pamela Cone, and Professor Beth Colangelo who came to support us and assisted with cording students. That was a special honor for Iota Sigma and all who attended this event that you came to support us and the students during this special time in their SON journey.
Community Nurse Leader: Captain Gabriel Marin is a 2016 nursing graduate from the HD campus and began at St. Mary's Medical Center as an Emergency Room nurse and currently works at Loma Linda University in the Cardiac/Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. Capt. Marin served in the United States Air Force as a lieutenant as a flight nurse, transporting the injured in and out of theater to receive the necessary medical treatment and to be reunited with their families. He aspires to be a CRNA and plans to share his experience with new nursing students as this reminds him of where he began.

Guest Speaker Dr. Jan Nick's speech on Leaning In was inspirational and well received. She provided inspiration to our new inductees that it is ok to fail, but it is important to try again. Her mantra "successful people fail" will resonate as new and seasoned nurses will fail from time to time, but we reassess and try again to break barriers to nursing care to provide excellence in nursing care.
Student High Desert SNAP helpers Dolores Holguin, Jessica Viera, Jorge Fuentes, Melinda Morales came bright and early to help Iota Sigma board members set up the room for the new inductees. We are all grateful for their help.
Iota Sigma Student Interns: Sheccid Valeria Arroyo Lizarraga and Marina Borboa will be assisting Vicky Clavir Membership Chair with membership recruitment and retention. In addition, our recently applied student intern Montielle Brandman, and newly inducted member/active volunteer, Gabriel Marin will be assisting in membership recruitment and retention.
Excellence Awards were presented to Marie Podboy (Education) and Debbie Clausen (Leadership) and Dr. Jan Nick (Research to Clinical Practice) for their excellence in a variety of categories. We -Iota Sigma- thank them for their excellence in nursing practice.
Scholarship Awardees Jennifer Montgomery (HDRC with graduation date projected December 2022) and Victoria Wang (ELM program, projected graduation date May 2022).
Silent Auction and opportunity drawing- Kathy Van Allen presented a beautiful silent auction which resulted in raising $852 which goes toward scholarships and research awards. Thank you to those who donated items and placed bids during the auction.
