Juli Boit is interviewed by nursing colleague, Dr. Sarah Obermeyer. Sixteen years ago, Juli Boit, was a 25-year-old nurse practitioner, who moved from Los Angeles to a small village in Kenya to be part of an HIV program. In 2009, she founded Kimbilio Hospice where men, women, and children come either to heal or to be loved until they die.

On an ordinary Friday afternoon in 2016, a three-pound baby boy, Ryan, was brought to Kimbilio Hospice. He had been born prematurely earlier that week. His mother passed away during childbirth, and neighbors miraculously kept Ryan alive on water alone for five days until they brought him to the hospice. Juli and her husband, Titus, brought Ryan to their home to care for him simply wanting to make sure he would survive. When Ryan was six months old, he and two of his other siblings were also diagnosed with sickle cell disease. In Kenya, 80% of children with sickle cell disease die before they reach their second birthday.

Juli's first book, From Beyond the Skies, is a story of hope chronicling her family’s journey through the boys’ transplants and a retelling of the truth: LOVE is a privilege that is both hard and holy.

Join Juli and Sarah as they discuss the book and learn more about how Juli employed her nursing knowledge and her exploration of "what love looks like" to advocate and care for her sons.
