Clinical Process Innovation

“Moving into the next century, the most important breakthroughs will be in the from of clinical processinnovation rather than clinicalproduct improvement…the next big advances in health care will be the development of protocols for delivering patient care across health care settings over time.”

JD Kleinke, Bleeding Edge from Jaan Sidorov's Blog

Quality & Safety through QSEN and integration of nursing specific meaningful use data will be key to achieving John's vision. It can become the mechanism for our primary commitment to the patient through patient advocacy - the third statement in our Code of Ethics for Nurses.

sounds great, but probably not feasible in today's economy .. unless of course they make the staff nurses do it .. on top of all the rest of their work! And who wants to predict poor outcomes ... if we did, surgeons probably would not operate on half their patients .. which poses more ethical questions ... such as the futility of care, and costs to society .. I could go on....

I believe that front line staff, led by nurses, will become involved with data and help data managers to build models of research that are context (unit/dept) specified. This will improve model specification thus decreasing error and improving the accuracy of our prediction of outcomes.
