The Human Side of Nursing: A Short Story Collection
Nurses and Their Patients: Acts of Courage and Conviction
Nurses and Their Patients: Compassion and Commitment
Three short story collections in new series featuring patients, families, and their nurses depict author Lois Gerber’s forty-year community health nursing career
The new series titled Nursing in the Neighborhoods: Stories of Patients, Families, and Their Nurses consists of three eBooks, each of which is a collection of short stories that draws upon Lois Gerber’s myriad experiences over her forty-year nursing career. Each story, though fictionalized, was inspired by patients, families, and nurses the author has personally known and cared for.
The Human Side of Nursing: A Short Story Collection details some of the day-to-day experiences of a visiting nurse and her interactions with various patients and family members. In fifteen vignettes, Ms. Gerber explores how illness, aging, and disability affect people and how various individuals regain hope and meaning as they learn to manage their health and relationships. As in real life, comments the author, some of the stories have happy endings while others end in tragedy.
In Nurses and Their Patients: Acts of Courage and Conviction, Gerber pens fourteen short stories that explore the dynamics of family relationships and their connection to society at large. These stories focus on physical, emotional, and spiritual health and the challenges people must overcome to make permanent changes in their lives and meet important life challenges.
In Nurses and Their Patients: Compassion and Commitment, Gerber introduces twelve very different individuals who are all seeking love and security of one sort or another. From a hockey player dad who dreams of his son following in his footsteps to a teenage girl with Down syndrome who wonders what “boyfriend love” is to a lonely woman obsessed with her neighbor’s oil lamp, Gerber writes about characters searching for themselves and the often-heroic efforts people make to care for themselves or for others who are ill or in need.
Ms. Gerber comments, “I’m a different and better person because of my patients, their families, the nurses I’ve worked with, and the students I’ve taught. I want to share all I’ve learned about courage and compassion and working with others whose backgrounds and values are different from my own.”
Many of Ms. Gerber’s stories have been published previously in nursing journals, and three stories are award winners from the nursing journals Nursing2004, Nursing2007, and Nursing2008. For more information or to request review copies or media commentary, email nursesbookshelf@gmail.com.
“Lois' stories of caring for her patients expertly depict how not only the patient or family member is touched by her interventions, but also how [the nurse] herself is affected.”
