change and transformation: journey from practicing nurse to nursing faculty

By Lisa Beals posted Wed July 06,2011 08:43 AM

Nursing has challenged, frustrated, assisted in personal growth and propelled me onward toward another level of experience. For the past 20 years, I have practiced as a Registered Nurse in a small community hospital in the center of the Midwest, always having in the back of my mind the goal becoming a nurse educator. Well, my goal has become a reality with the attainment of my Master’s Degree in Nursing Education and recent appointment as an assistant professor. For the past three years, while working my way through school, I gained experience in academia as a clinical instructor with snippets of experience in the classroom. This blog will relate my lived experience as I reflect on the last three years and begin my new experiences as an assistant professor. The fall semester is quickly approaching and with excitement as well as trepidation, my one thought is "let the games begin".

Hi, Lisa,
Congratulations on your career path. I read your blog and thought I was reading my own. I am a master's student at present and have been in acute care and now hospice. I look forward to becoming an educator. I also have an interest in leadership and politics. Good luck to you and I wish you all the best!

Thank you for your comment and even with the limited amount of time I have been teaching I feel that I enjoy it more and more. I wish you the best.
