Sigma Theta Tau Small Grant

I am very thankful to Sigma Theta Tau for receiving a Small Grant Research Grant in 2010.  It allowed me to conduct pilot research examining an intervention to promote responsible sexual behaviors in young women in detention.  Three curricula, Power Through Choices, Big Decisions, and Thoughts on Teen Parenting, were used to provide positive health messages, personal responsibility, and empowerment to young women with very complex lives.  Nursing students received training and provided all instruction, thereby providing mentoring and positive role modeling in juvenile justice settings.  The Sigma grant provided student stipends, participant incentives, and instructional supplies.  The young women and college nursing students all expressed great satisfaction to the programs, though the short term intervention was unable to significantly impact teen behaviors.  We have an article in review and we will continue to pursue effective options to provide meaningful programming for young women who gravely need this information! Thanks Sigma Theta Tau!!!

It is wonderful to hear how the grants provided by Sigma Theta Tau International were able to assist your meaningful program. The issue you were addressing is so multifactorial in nature. My hope is that the connection the members of your project made with these vulnerable women may inspire them in other ways that are also challenging to measure but valuable.
