Jacqueline, that was very courageous of you, for families of victims such as yourself it would have been overwhelming to want to do something without formal training. That is an understand as I can relate to as in 9/11 attack on NYC. However, after reevaluating how little I could do and that I would only become part of the problem I pulled back. Considering the health related effects that followed first responders, I am content with my decision back then.
However, back you your courage and bravery, I commend you on your unselfish act to give back to your parents land! I do agree with you that training in preparation for emergency disaster is paramount, especially in light of infection control. Another problem is language barriers, as well how to deal with mass challenges in emergency situations with limited supplies to treat victims of drowing, burns, CO2 and or heat related injuries, and what preventable measures one needs to take, such as viccination(s) in advance prior to rushing off to another country to help and not become a victim yourself. A great article!
